Matsuyama Castle is a mountain castle located in Yoshimi Town, Saitama Prefecture.
It is also called “Musashi Matsuyama Castle” or “Bushu Matsuyama Castle” to distinguish it from Matsuyama Castle of Ehime Prefecture.
The time of the castle is unknown, but it is said that it was built in by professional “Ueda Tomonao” in Muromachi era six year (1399). It is said that Ueda City belonged to Uesugi Ougiya. During the Muromachi Period and Warring States Period, it played an important role in the interval between Ueno and Shimosa. From the south Shimosa Furukawa Kojima, from the north to Ueno County Uesugi Yamanouchi served as the front line of attacks.
In Tenmon Sixth Year (1537), Sagami county’s “Hojo Ujitsuna” attacked Kawagoe Castle and dropped it. With that momentum he also attacks Musashi Matsuyama Castle, but Ougiya Uesugi’s Naniwada Norishige skillfully repelled it. Ougiya “Uesugi Tomosada” who lost Kawagoe Castle moved the main castle to Matsuyama castle and made a major renovation.
However, in the 14th year of Tenmon (1545), when “Kami Uesugi” and “Naniwada Norishige” were killed at the Kawagoe Night Battle to try to recapture the Kawagoe Castle that was robbed by Mr. Hojo, Ougiya Uesugi was eventually destroyed Musashi Matsuyama Castle and even passed to Hojo.
In the same year, Uesugi’s “Ota Sukemasa” who was a son-in-law of Naniwada Norishige recapture Matsuyama Castle and “Ueda Tomonao” becomes a castle keeper, but The main Asachoku went back to Hojo. Since then, Matsuyama Castle became an important base for Mr. Hojo’s Musashi management.
During the 18th year of Tensho (1590), Because Odawara conquest by Toyotomi Hideyoshi was held and the castle owner “Ueda Norisada” basked in Odawara Castle, Chief Vassal “Yamada Naoyasu” casketed to Matsuyama Castle but due to the attack of Maeda Toshiie and Uesugi Kagekatsu attacks.
When Tokugawa Ieyasu enters in Kanto region to inquire Hojo’s legacy, and Matsuo Heiji enters the castle into the Matsuyama clan. Matsuyama Castle became abandoned and incorporated as a Kawagoe clan territory when “Matsudaira Tadayori” which was a trace of Keicho sixth year (1601) was transferred to the Hamamatsu clan.
