Hakuchi castle
The important base of uniting Shikoku
Hakuchi Castle is a flatland-mountain castle located in Hakuchi, Ikeda Town, Miyoshi City, Tokushima Province. It is famous for being the base of uniting Shikoku for [Choso kabemotochika].
Hakuchi Castle is considered an important base towards Motochika who aimed to conquer Shikoku. The castle built year is unknown, but it is said that the castle was built by Mr. Ounishi during the South and North Dynasties.
Mr. Ounishi belonged to Mr. Hosokawa who was the guardian of Awano Country. When entering Sengoku Era, he took the power from Mr. Hosokawa and followed Mr. Miyoshi. Tensho 3 year (1575), [Chosokabe Motochika] who aimed to conquer Shikoku saw the geographic importance. The next year Tensho 4 year (1576), Hakuchi Castle was successfully taken.
At that time, the castle owner [Ounishi Kakuyo] escapted to Sanuki Country. However, Tensho 6 year (1578), it also fell down, and Kakuyo surrendered to Motochika. After that, it was used at the base to unite Shikoku. Tensho 13 year (1584), it was the defensive base when [Toyotomi Hideyoshi] attacked Shikoku, but it fell down and became abandoned.
There is almost nothing left on the current castle ruins, only soil and stone monument is left. Ounishi Shrine is built nearby.
