[Description]
Karatsu Castle is located in Higashijonai, Karatsu City, Saga Province. It is also called Maizuru Castle. Honmaru is set at Mitsushima Mountain, Ninoma, Sannomaru are in the west.
The north faces Karatsu ocean, so it is also called Kaijo. Bunroku 4 year (1595), Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s vassal Terazawa Hirotaka got this place. Keicho 5 year (1600), Hirotaka belonged to the East Army at the Battle of Sekigahara, and became the external Daimyo of 123000 stones.
Keicho 7 year (1602) started building the castle and in Keicho 13 year (1608) it was finished. When building the castle, the land of Mitsushima Mountain was disconnected from the east Karatsu, and the water flow from Matsuura River to Karatsu River was changed. In addition, after Hideyoshi died, Nagoya Castle was abandoned. It used the materials of Nagoya Castel. Lots of Daimyo from Kyushu came to help build the castle.
Only Tenshu platform was built. Karatsu Castle had Tenshu however, Kanei 4 year (1627), it was written in the report that there was no Tenshu. And there are no information to prove the existence of Tenshu.
Even there is no construction drawing of Tenshu. The current Tenshu was built in Showa 41 year (1966) while imaging the style of Keicho Era.
When Tomioka Castle was attacked during Shimahara Chaos, the responsible person Amakusa was forfeited 40000 stones. Seipo 4 year (1647), he committed suicide at Edo Clan. Because he did not have son, Mr. Terazawa was destroyed. After Mr. Terazawa was replaced, Keian 2 year (1649), Oukubo Tadamoto became the castle owner. Enpo 6 year (1678), Mr. Oukubo was transferred to Sakura Castle, and at the same time, Matsudaira Norihisa entered Karatsu Castle.
Genroku 4 year (1691), Mr. Matsudaira was transferred to Toba Castle and Doi Toshimasu entered. Horeki 12 year (1762), Mr. Doi was transferred to Koga Castle and Mizuno Tadatou entered. Bunka 14 year (1817), Mizuno Tadakuni aimed to transfer to Hamamatsu Castle, and Ogasawara Nagamasa entered. It became the residence of Mr. Ogasawara until Meiji Restoration.
Meiji 4 year (1871), it was abandoned, and Meiji 10 year (1877), Maizuru Park was built and opened to the public. Showa 41 year (1966), a simulated Tenshu was built as a cultural tourist facility, and the gate, oar were also rebuilt at the same time.
