Uwajima castle
The famous castle built by Toudou Takatora ruled by Date Hidemune
[Description]
Uwajima Castle is located in Marunouchi, Uwajima City, Ehime Province. It is appointed as the historic site. The castle was built by [Toudou Takatora] in the mid century. The history of Uwajima Castle is very old. It was called Marukuji Castle in Katei 2 year (1236).
Tensho 3 year (1575), it was the residence of Saionji Nobuhisa, and this area was ruled by him. However, Tensho 13 year (1585), Toyotomi Hideyoshi launched [the Battle of 4 countries] and Iyono Country belonged to Kobayakawa Takakage, and Takakage’s vassal [Morida Ukyo] was appointed as the castle officer. Tensho 15 year (1587), Kobayakawa Takakage transferred to Chikuzen Country, and Toda Katsutaka entered the castle. Toda Yozaemon was the castle officer.
Bunroku 4 year (1595), [Toudou Takatora] was awarded 70000 stones and entered the castle and greatly renovated it. Keicho 6 year (1601), the castle was completed and officially being named as Uwajima Castle. Ninomaru is located on the mountain peak of a hill of 74 meters in height, Fujimori Maru in the North.
It was flatland-mountain castle of the ladder type which makes the outer shell the residence of Samurai. The sea water was absorbed from the east, also called [Kaijo (Water Castle)]. It is thought that the form of the time that Toudou Takatora built the castle was utilized, which are currently seen at the building.
Takatora used various ideas for the catle. There were no other castle that used this idea. Furthermore, in Uwajima Castle, there were several intervals to pass through the inside of the primeval forest from Honmaru Tenshu, leading to bases of secret squadrons. Uwajima Castle was a castle in which the secrets of an excellent skill conducted by Takatora.
However, when the castle was completed, Takatora moved to Imabari Castle, and Uwajima Castle was left to the castle officer. When the Battle of Sekigahara finished, in order to suppress Mr. Toyotomi, Takatora transferred to Ueno. Keicho 13 year (1608), Tomita Nobutaka entered the castle. Keicho 18 year (1613), Nobutaka was replaced the Uwa Town was ruled directly by Tokugawa Shogun.
Keicho 19 year (1614), the eldest son of Date Masanori was awarded 100000 stones and ruled Mr. Date until Meiji Era.
The current moats are buried under the sea. After Meiji, majority of the building were removed and only Tenshu was left. It is now considered the important national treasure.
