Yatsushiro Castle
One of the residences of Sengoku Daimyo Sagara Yoshishige, but later being conquered by Mr. Tsumaji.
[Description]
Yatsushiro Castle is a flatland castle located in Yatsushiro City, Kumamoto Province.
It is said that the castle was built in Edo Era after got the permission from shogun in Matsue. It is also called Matsue Castle.
[Sagara Yoshishige] of Hitoyoshi Castle ruled this area in Sengoku Era, but it was taken while Mr. Shimatsu went up to North. Tensho 14 year (1586), Toyotomi Hideyoshi launched Kyushu Battle and fought with Shimatsu. As a result, Mr. Sagara was destroyed.
Later, Hideyoshi gave the north to [Kato Kiyomasa] and south to [Konishi Yukinaga], Konishi Yukinaga ordered his vassal [Konishi Yukishige] to build Mugishima Castle. Keicho 5 year (1600), when Sekigahara Battle occurred, the west army Konishi Yukinaga was killed by Tokugawa Ieyasu’s order, Higo Country became Kato Kiyomasa’s territory.
Kiyomasa appointed his competent subordinate [Kato Masakata] as the castle officer and entered Mugishima Castle. For that reason, Mr. Kato’s second clan leader [Kato Tadahiro] got the permission to build a new castle in Matsue in Ganwa 6 year (1620). That is the former castle of Yatsushiro Castle.
After that, followed by Tokugawa Shogun, Mr. Kato was taken over, [Hosokawa Tadaoki] moved from Buzen Kokuran to Kumamoto Clan, [Matsui Okinaga] was appointed as the castle officer at 30000 stones. At this time, Yatsushiro Castle was changed name from Mugishima Castle.
Later, Mr. Matsui renovated castle and he ruled this area until the end of Shogun•Meji. Current Yatsushiro Castle ruins have Tenshu platform, stone, moats ect left. North Maru trace, castle, wall, Honmaru study room and garden also can be seen.
In the One Country One Castle Order, Hatsushiro Castle in Higo got the special permission to control Satsuma Clan and Hitoyoshi Clan.
