[Introduction of Motoyoita Castle]
Motoyoita Castle is a mountain castle located in Motoyoita, Yoita Town, Nagaoka Citry, Niigata Province.
Although castle built year is unknown, it is said that Mr. Nittashi [Kagosawa Nyudo] built it in Kenmu 1 year (1334).
After that, it became the residence of Mr. Uesugi, who was the guardian of Echigo Country. However, in Eisho 4 year (1507), Mr. Iinuma was attacked by Tamekage army in the [Eisho Chaos] which broke out between the Echigo guardian [Nagao Tamekage] and [Uesugi Fusayoshi]. As a result, Mr. Nagao’s vassal [Naoe Kagetsuna] became the castle owner.
Since then, [Naoe Kagetsuna] moved the castle to Yoita Castle, and it is said that he used Motoyoita Castle as a sub-castle. When Toyotomi administration was established, [Uesugi Kagekatsu] was transferred to Aizu, and also gave Yonezawa Castle to his vassal [Naoe Kanetsugu]. It is said that Motoyoita Castle became abandoned.
It is also said that Yoita Castle was built at the same time when Motoyoita Castle was abandoned. Nowadays, castle monuments, curved tracks, moats, base and wells are still left on the castle ruins.
