A castle where a fierce battle between joint army of Mr. Azai and Asakura, and Oda army occurred
[Introduction of Usayama Castle]
Usayama Castle is a mountain castle located in South Shiga Town, Otsu City, Shiga Province.
It is said that Oda Nobunaga ordered [Mori Yoshinari] to build the castle in order to prepare for the southward movements of Mr. Asakura and Azai and control Lake Biwa and Hokkaido Road.
Genki 1 year (1570), Nobunaga, who advanced the army to attack Hongan Temple in Osaka, arranged Yoshinari and his younger brother [Oda Nobuharu] and other forces to secure the back of Omi. However, in the same year, the joint army of Mr. Azai and Asakura collaborated with Hongan Temple and suppressed Nobunaga, and the joint army of Yoshinari and Nobuharu desperately defended.
Facing the overwhelming army of Mr. Azai and Asakura, though Oda army prevented well at only one thousand soldiers, they were defeated. Yoshinari and Nobuharu and others died. However Usayama Castle managed to escape from falling down because of the defensive battle of the defensive soldiers.
Nobunaga, who knew the circumstances of Omi, returned the army from the attack of Hongan Temple and broke Mr. Azai and Asakura coalition army scatteredly. At that time, the defeated Azai•Asakura army retreated to Hiei Mountain. (Hiei Mountain was where Azai•Asakura army hid and it is connected to Hiei Mountain Enryaku Temple Attack later )
It is considered that both armies realized the disadvantage of the long term war therefore they decided to withdraw from both sides, and after that Usayama Castle became abandoned. Nowadays, some private and public facilities are built on the castle ruins, and only a part of stones are left.
