Yokoyama Castle

[Introduction of Yokoyama Castle]
Yokoyama Castle is a mountain castle which located in the area from Horibe Town to Ishida Town, Nagahama City, Shiga Province.

It was built in Eiroku 4 year (1561) by Azai Nagamasa, which was used as a defense base for Mr. Rokkaku from South Omi, [Azai Ihiro] was appointed as the castle owner.

Nagamasa married the Oda Nobunaga’s sister and had a military alliance with Nobunaga. Since Nobunaga attacked Echizen [Asakura Yoshikane], the allied country of Mr. Azai, Nagamasa started against Nobunaga. Since Genki 1 year (1570), he continued fighting with Oda Nobunaga. Therefore, Yokoyama Castle, which located in front of Mr. Azai’s headquarter [Odani Castle], became more and more important. More importantly, Nobunaga occupied Yokoyama Castle and appointed Kinoshita Tokichiro Hideyoshi as the castle guardian.

Hideyoshi appointed Yokoyama Castle as a base and made a strategic plan of Mr. Azai with [Takenaka Hanbei] there. In Tensho 1 year (1573) September, when Mr. Azai was destroyed, Hideyoshi got Azai and Sakata town and built Nagahama Castle there. It is considered that Yokoyama Castle was abandoned around that period.

Nowadays, there are no important historical sites left at Yokoyama Castle ruins, and the castle monuments and signs are built.
