Echizen Katsuyama Castle

[Description]
Echizen Katsuyama Castle was a flatland castle which used to be located today’s
Katsuyama-shi, Fukui. Katsuie Shibata was given the land of Echizen by Nobunaga Oda,
and orderd to Katsuyasu Shibata buildt a castle.

With a fall of the Katsuyama clan under the influence of the new general, Hideyoshi
Toyotomi, the owner of the castle had constantly came and go until Hideyasu Yuki ruled the
land around Echizen Castle in 1601. However, the Yuki clan, as later known as the
Matsudaira clan, was punished and the land of Echizen including this castle was taken
away. In 1624, Naomoto Matsudaira earned the land back by paying 30,000 Goku*.
Naoyoshi Matsudaira governed the land, yet he was relocated to another part of Japan in1644. This made theis land of Echizen a into a national land owned by the Edo government
property. In 1691, Sadanobu Ogasawara paid 22,000 Goku forto own the land, and the
ownership by the Ogasawara clan until Meiji Restoration. The castle had permitted to
complete building while Nagataka Ogasawara, the 7 th ruler, was in charge.

During Meiji era, the government passed on Haijo Rei, a regulation to abandon castles, and the Katsuyama Castle was destroyed. Although stone fences and Tenshu, the keep tower,was still be found in Showa era, only a few gates and a stone stele remain to this day.

There is a Katsuyamajo Museum, which is known for the tallest iconic Tenshu, near the
Katsuyama Castle ruin, but it has nothing to do with Katsuyama Castle.
