Shiroishi Castle
The Daimyo castle of the chief vassal Katakura Kagetsuna of the Date family Shiroishi Castle
[Description]
Shiroishi Castle was a castle that was ruled by a vassal of the Date family, 「Katakura Family」 in Shiroishi City, Miyagi Prefecture. It was not destroyed by the fact that it was recognized as an exception to the 「Ikkoku Ichijo Rei」 (an ordinance of the one Castle per province) by the Tokugawa Shogunate. Originally, the Shiraishi clan settled in the Kamakura period and building the foundation of Shiroishi Castle. When the Uesugi family was transferred to Aizu, Shiroishi Castle became Aizu territory and the senior vassal of Kagekatsu Uesugi, 「Amakasu Kagetsugu」entered the castle as a castle keeper.
However, Masamune Date attacked the Shiroishi Castle at the Ouu front of the Battle of Sekigahara, which broke out in the 5th Year of Keichou Era (1600), and his uncle, 「Ishikawa Akimitsu」, became the castle keeper. After that, the chief retainer of Masamune, 「Katakura Kagetsuna」, was appointed as the castellan, and the Katakura family ruled this area until the Meiji Restoration. In the Boshin War, it was occupied by the new government army, and at one time it was under the control of the Morioka Domain.
In the Meiji period, the edict of Haijo Rei was issued throughout the country, and Shiroishi Castle was destroyed. The current Shiroishi Castle was reconstructed as a Restored Wooden Castle tower of three-ply, three-storey, and it was established as Masuoka Park.
