Yamanaka Castle
where Hojo Ujikatus enclosed but finally fell down
[Description]
Yamanaka Castle is a mountain castle located in Yamanaka Shinden, Mishima City, Shizuoka Province.
It was built as the most important defense for the main castle Odawara Castle when Hojo Ujiyasu was the head of Mr. Hojo.
After Ujiyasu died, [Hojo Ujimasa] was the head, the relationship between Toyotomi Hideyoshi became worse. Ujimasa received the order to renovate Yamanaka Castle.
Hideyoshi’s nephew [Toyotomi Hidetsugu] attacked Yamanaka Castle with 70000 soldiers. On the other hand, [Hojo Ujikatsu], [Matsuda Ienaga] and [Mamiya Yasutoshi] defended the castle with 3000 soldiers.
The fight was extremely fierce and the defense side also caused a lot of damage such as Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s Daimyo [Hitotsuyanagi Naosue] was attacked by [Mamiya Yasutoshi]. However, the difference in fighting force gradually surfaced, [Amamiya Yasutoshi] asked the master [Hojo Ujikatsu] to withdraw and they left themselves in the castle and died.
In the end, Yamanaka Castle fell down in half a day, both sides experiences great damage. In addition, Yamanaka Castle was abandoned when it fell down. Nowadays, [Yamanaka Castle Park] is built, bending wheel, moat, soil are left on the current castle ruins. It is considered one of the 100 famous castles in Japan.
