[Castle name]
Ichijodani Castle(Ichijoasdaniasakurashi Clan Ruins)
A residential castle called Ichijodan of The Echizen Governer, Yoshikage Asakura, who was defeated by Yoshinobu Oda
[Description]
Ichijodani castle was the Asakura clan’s residential castle for generations, known for gaining power and expelling the governing clan of Echizen, the Shibashi. It is currently located in Fukui-Shi, Fukui. As the name suggests, there is a long fence line from north to south in the mountainous area, surrounded by samurai houses and a castle town with gates on the north and south. Because of this, the valley became a huge fortress.
At its peak, the castle town had a population of about 10,000, this was referred to as the golden age. In 1573, Nobunaga Oda was under control at Owari, Mino,Kinki and a part of Ise and destroyed the castle town while Yoshinaga was the head of the Asakura clan. At this time, Ichijodani castle was embroiled in a devastating fire and was completely destroyed.
After that, a senior statesman, Katsuie Shibata from Oda family had control over Echizen and Ichijodani castle, but it eventually sank into obscurity during the Sengoku era because he moved his base from Echizen to Kitanosho. In recent years, the ruins are being reconstructed and restored. It still has its walls, dry moats, channels and earthwork. Ichijodani castle is number 37 of Japan’s Top 100 Castles.
