[Castle name]
Makabe Castle
[Description]
Makabe Castle was built by Nagamoto Makabe in 1172 and used as a residential castle for the Makabe clan for generations.
During Sengoku era, Ujimoto Sakabe served for Yoshishige Satake and fought against the Yuki clan and the Hojo clan. Ujimoto was famous for his excellence in sword and bravery to fight at the front-line, and some even called him “Oni(demon) Makabe.”
Ujimoto Makabe learned swordmanship from Bokuden Tsukahara
In 1598, Nagamoto retired and his nephew, Fusamoto Makabe succeeded as the head of the Makabe clan. The master, Yoshinobu Satake supported Mitsunari Ishida at the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600. As a result of losing the battle, Yoshinobu was relocated to Akita Castle (Kubota Castle) in Dewa and Fusamoto followed.
Although Fusamoto received the land of Kakunodate, Ujimoto Makabe stayed in Hitachi. Nagamasa Asano took over Makabe Castle as a retirement residence after the battle of Sekigahara. Upon the death of Nagamasa, Nagashige Asano came into the possession with 50,000 Goku, but ended up being relocated to Kasama Castle in 1622. Makabe Castle has been abandoned since then.
