[Castle name]
Zeze Castle
a residential castle for the Toda and the Honda clan which was built as a part of infrastructure development by Edo government after the Battle of Sekigahara
[Description]
Zeze Castle was at Biwa Lake-side in Honmaru-cho Otsu-shi, Shiga. It was built by Ieyasu Tokugawa in 1600 as a part of infrastructure development. Ieyasu was about to conquer Japan at the Battle of Sekigahara.
Zeze Castle was located at a key spot on Tokaido Road to increase security for smoother transportation while a nearby castle, Otsu Castle, was abandoned. Kazuaki Toda contributed 30,000 Goku and became the first chief of the castle.
After Ujikane Toda, a son of Kazuaki, was relocated to Amagasaki, Harima, Yasutoshi Honda took over the castle. After that, the chief of Zeze castle kept on changing instead of being inherited within one clan. Toshitsugu Honda from Nishio became the last chief Zeze Castle with 70,000 Goku, and his possession lasted until Meiji Restoration.
The Honmaru ruin is now maintained as Zeze Castle Ruin Park with a few bits of stone fences.
