[Castle name]
Siryokaku
Shiryokaku was a western style fort, along with Goryokaku, that was built by the former shogunate forces
[Explanatin]
Shiryokaku was a fort that was built in the city of Hakodate in southern Hokkaido, Japan, by the former shogunate forces during Hakodate war. It was surrounded by karabori (a dry moat), and the measurements were about 100 meters east to west, and 70 meters south to north.
The gun platforms were located in the four corners, and the gate and the pathway are located at the southwest side.
It was named Shiryokaku because of its quadrangle shape, and it was also called Shindaiba, Kamiyamadaiba, and Shin Goryokaku. It was built on a hill as a branch castle to support Goryokaku. To build Shiryokaku, 200 soldiers of former shogun forces and 100 villagers nearby were recruited, and it was built in a rush through day and night.
However, it was weak as a fort and too small to barricade, and even wells did not exist.
It is shaped as a fort, but in actuality it was closer to the field fortification.
Nanae fort was another fort that was built at that time. It is said that the commander who was in charge of the construction was either Keisuke Otori, or captain Brunet who came from France to teach the Tokugawa-family the western military style. In 1934 It was registered as a national historic site.
Even though it is not very well known compared to Goryukaku, it is an important historic site in order to understand the Ezo republic.
