[Description]
Kiso Fukushima Castle used to stand in a mountain in Kiso Town, Kiso District, Nagano Prefecture.
It was built by Kiso Yoshiyasu in the middle of the Warring States period. It had been used until the time of Yoshiyasu’s heir Yoshimasa.
They lived in Uenodan Castle at the foot of the mountain in peace and used Kiso Fukushima Castle in war. Kiso Yoshimasa was married to Takeda Shingen’s daughter and he was treated as one of the Takeda family. However, after Shingen died of illness and Takeda Katsuyori succeeded him, Yoshimasa betrayed to the Oda family because the Takeda family got weak and the Oda family became strong.
In the 10th year of the Tensho period (1582), Kiso Yoshimasa guided Oda Nobutada to attack the Takeda family. Katsuyori’s brother Nishina Nobumori was besieged in Takato Castle and died. There was no other battle and retainers of the Takeda family surrendered.
Katsuyori built Shinpu Castle (Nirasaki City) to resist, but he couldn’t complete building it. He escaped to his cousin Oyamada Nobushige in Iwadonoyama Castle.

However, he defected to the Oda family, too, when Katsuyori arrived at Iwadonoyama. Katsuyori was defeated in the last battle in Temmoku Mountain and he and his son Nobukatsu committed suicide.
On the other hand, Kiso Yoshimasa had its small territory ensured and followed the Oda family. In the 10th year of the Tensho period (1582), Akechi Mitsuhide, a retainer of the Oda family, suddenly killed his lord Oda Nobunaga in the Honnoji Incident. It caused troubles in Shinano Province.
Retainers of the Oda family went back to their home Mino or Owari. After the Oda family disappeared, the Hojo family and the Tokugawa family invaded Shinano Province. Yohsimasa joined Tokugawa Ieyasu to be ensured his estate. After Toyotomi Hideyoshi became stronger, he defected to him and was attacked by Tokugawa Ieyasu.
He was besieged in Tsumago Castle and repelled the Tokugawa army. Later, Hideyoshi gave Shinano Province to Ieyasu and Yoshimasa became a man of Ieyasu. After Hojo Conquest, Hideyoshi transferred Ieyasu to Kanto, which had been a Hojo territory.
Kiso Yoshimasa received Asahi City 10000 kokus estate as a man of Ieyasu.
After the Kiso family left Kiso Castle, it was destroyed.
