[Castle name]
Kuwabara Castle
It was a sub castle of Suwa Yorishige’s Uehara Castle.
[Description]
Kuwabara Castle used to stand in current Kuwabara, Shiga, Suwa City, Nagano Prefecture from the Middle Age to the Warring States period.
We don’t know when it was built. It was sub castle of the Suwa family’s Uehara Castle
In the 11th year of the Tenbun period (1542), Takeda Harunobu (Takeda Shingen) invaded Suwa and surrounded Uehara Castle, which was the main base of Suwa Yorishige. Yorishige thought he couldn’t resist the attack and he escaped to the branch castle, Kuwabara Castle.
Later, Kuwabara Castle was attacked, too. He surrendered to the Takeda family and was took to Kai Province. After that, he was forced to commit suicide and the Suwa family practically got extinct. Kuwabara Castle is said to have been destroyed at that time.
In addition, Shingen made Suwa Yorishige’s daughter his concubine. He had his third son Katsuyori, whose mother was the concubine, succeed the Suwa family. On the other hand, Shingen’s heir Yoshinobu, who was married to a daughter of the Imagawa family, disagreed with him and committed suicide. Then, the Takeda family was succeeded by Nobukatsu, the heir of Katsuyori. Katsuyori became his guardian.
