Izumi Domain Residence used to stand in current Izumi, Iwaki City, Fukushima Prefecture.
In the 8th year of the Gen’na period (A.D.1622), Tori Tadamasa was moved from Iwaki Taira Domain to Dewa Yamagata Domain. In Taira Castle, Naito Masanaga came from Kazusa Sanuki Domain and became the head with 70000 kokus of estate.
At that time, Masanaga’s heir Naito Tadaoki already had 20000 kokus estate. After Masanaga died, Tadaoki succeeded the Naito family. He gave the 20000 kokus estate to Masaharu, the last son of Masanaga, and had him establish Izumi Domain.
In the 3rd year of the Shoho period, Masaharu’s son Naito Masachika became the head of Izumi Domain. He his residence and the castle town and reformed the domain. Later, the Naito family was moved to Joshu Annaka and alternatively the Itakura family became the head. In the 3rd year of the Enkyo period (A.D.1746), Honda Tadayuki became the head with 15000 kokus estate.
After that, Honda Tadakazu succeeded Tadayuki. He reformed the domain and improved its finance. This reform caught a Roju Matsudaira Sadanobu’s attention. Tadakazu gradually promoted in shogunate.
First he became a Wakadoshiyori, next Osoba-goyonin, finally Roju-kaku. Because of his promotion, Izumi Domain got an additional 5000 kokus estate. Then it has 20000 kokus estate.
In the period of the 6th head Honda Tadatoshi, the Boshin War started. The domain joined the Oetsu-reppan alliance and fought against the new government. However, Izumi Domain had a poor army. It quickly surrendered to the new government army.
Then, for the guilt that it fought for shogunate, it was deprived of 2000 kokus estate and the court rank. In the 4th year of the Meiji period, the Meiji government abolished all domains and established prefectures. The trace of the residence disappeared, too.
