Ikeda Castle used to stand on a hill in current Ikeda City, Osaka
In the 1st year of the Kemmu period, Ikeda Castle was built by Ikeda Noriyori, a local lord. The Ikeda family lived in it for generations.

in the 1st year of the Bummei period (A.D.1469), in the Onin War, the Ikeda family was in the eastern army. They lost the castle under an attack of Ouchi Masahiro, but took it back right away.

In the Warring States period, in the 11th year of the Eiroku period, the head Ikeda Katsumasa resist to Oda Nobunaga, but was defeated. Luckily, Katsumasa was not be punished for his resistance. He received 60000 kokus estate and became a retainer of the Oda family.

Nobunaga assigned Ikeda Katsumasa, Itami Chikaoki, and Wada Koremasa to the three governors in Settu. However, Katsumasa’ man Araki MUrashige and Katsumasa’s relative Ikeda Tomomasa betrayed Katsumasa and attacked Ikeda Castle.

Katsumasa was exiled. they attacked Itami Chikaoki in Itami Castle and Wada Koremasa in Takatsuki castle and usurped the castles, too. After that, Murashige met Nobunaga and assigned to Settsu governor. This time, he renamed Itami Castle into Arioka Castle and set it his main base.

In the 6th year of the Tensho period (A.D.1578), Murashige suddenly betrayed to the Mori family and was besieged in Arioka Castle. The castle continued the siege for one year while Ibaragi Castle and Takatsuki Castle surrendered easily.

After all, it surrendered and was Murashige’s all family members were executed. On the other hand, Murashige himself escaped to the Mori territory in advance and survived. He was really accused because he left his family.

While this conflict, Nobunaga’s army used Ikeda Castle as its main base. After that, it was destroyed. Now, the ruin is used as Ikeda Castle Ruin Park.
