[Explanation]
Arai castle is a castle of Yamada who is from Murakami clan who was in Chikuma city, Nagano prefecture.
It was built in the mountaintop on the Chikuma River side, and it plays a role as a castle for Murakami Honjo’s “Katsurao Castle”.
Murakami Yoshikiyo repeatedly fought against Takeda Shingen continuous attacks, but in Tenmon 22 years (1553) Finally “Takeda Shingen” casts “Katsurao Castle” to fall. Yoshikiyo Murakami and his family dropped out on Echigo’s Kenshin Uesugi.
“Yashiro Masakuni” who followed Shingen as soon as Murakami left Arato castle, he was given piece of the land of “Yashiro Castle”. Takeda was destroyed when Oda Nobunaga raised the army of Koshu in Tenshou (1582), Takeda was destroyed, and the ruined castle owner “Yoshiro Hidemasa” was
minister of Uesugi Kagekatsu of the time.
In the same year, when Nobunaga Oda is honored by Mitsuhide Akechi in Honnō-ji incident, the countries of Shinano / Kai will become extremely confused and Yashiro Hidemasa joins under the control of Ieyasu Tokugawa. “Uesugi Kagekatsu” is very angry about this treachery act, attacks Arato castle, Hidemasa ignites the castle and retreats to Ieyasu.
After that, Ieyasu controlled the countries of Shinano • Kai and became the defense of the five countries “Mikawa, Toutomi, Suruga, Shinano, Kai”. Arato castle seems to have become abandoned after Hideyoshi left the castle.
Currently it is maintained as “Shiroyama Historical Park”, and the restoration of the halls, gates, guards, barracks etc. are proceeding based on the historical facts of the medieval castle.
