The important place where Otomo Sorin moved masin castle from Oita Funai Castle.
[Description]
Usuki Castle is a flatland-mountain castle located in Usuki City, Oita Province.
It is said that the castle was built by [Otomo Sorin] during Sengoku Era.
Eiroku 4 year (1561), [Outomo Yoshishige (Outomo Sorin)] was defeated by Mr. Mouri. And the next year Eiroku 5 year (1562), he built a new castle on Nyu Island and moved main castle to here from Oita Funai Castle.
After that, in order to suppress the rebellion of the vassal [Tabaru Chikatsura], Tensho 7 year (1579) he moved the main base to Oita Funai Castle, but it is considered a temporary method.
Tensho 14 year (1586), Shimazu Yoshihisa, Yoshihiro wanted to unite Kyushu, they launched battle and defeated Shimazu army (the Battle of Nyu Island Castle), castle also had great damaged. After that, Sourin met [Toyotomi Hideyoshi] who controlled the country, and asked for help.
He had the promise of support from Hideyoshi and he died the next year. After Sourin died, his son [Toshimune] inherited Mr. Outomo and followed Hideyoshi. However, he was punished at the Battle of Bunroku•Keicho for escaping in front of the enemy and he was replaced. Therefore, Mr. Outomo was destroyed.
[Fukuhara Nagataka] who was the brother-in-law of [Ishida Mitsunari] became the catle owner. Keicho 2 year (1597), [Outa Kazuyoshi] entered the castle and renovated it.
Keicho 5 year (1600), when the Battle of Sekigahara finished, [Inaba Sadamichi] was awarded by 50000 stones, his son [Norimichi] and his grandson renovated the castle. After that, the castle was ruled by Mr. Inaba for 15 generations until Meiji Restoration.
At that time Nyu Island was surrounded by sea from 3 directions and only 1 direction had land which became the natural important place. [Usuki Park] is being built on the current castle ruins.
