[Description]
Matsuida Castle is a mountain castle during Sengoku Era, located in Takanashi, Matsuida Town, Annaka City, Gunma Province.
The castle built year is unsure but it is said that it was built in Eiroku 1 year (1560) by Mr. Annaka who ruled this area.

It is recorded that in Choei 1 year (1487) [Annaka Tadachika] was the castle owner. After that it became the residence of Mr. Shiwa of Matsuida. When entering Sengoku Era, it became Mr. Annaka’s residence again. Annaka Castle was built for the purpose of preventing Takeda Shingen from attacking from the west.

At that time the master [Annaka Tadamasa] gave Annaka Castle to his son [Annaka Tadanari], and he himself moved to Matsuida Castle. Eiroku 7 year (1564), with Takeda Shingen attacked Ueno, [Matsuida Castle] opened, and belonged to Takeda’s side. On the other hand, [Annaka Tadanari] already surrended to Shingen.

Oyamada Toramitsu•Masayuki] entered the castle and expaned it. After that, Tensho 3 year (1575), Annaka Tadanari died at [Nagashi Battle]. Tensho 10 year (1582), Oyamada Masayuki died when attacking Takatou Castle.

At this battle Mr. Takeda was destroyed, and Ueno Country was given to Nobunaga’s competent vassal [Takigawa Kazumasu], Tsuda Hidemasa entered Matsuida Castle. At the same year, when Nobunaga was attacked by Akechi Mitsuhide, Mr. Hojo reacted quickly, and occupied Matsuida Castle. Therefore, Hidemasa escaped from Kanto.

Hoji Ujinao appointed [Daidouji Masashige] as the castle officer, and Masashige renovated and expanded the castle. This is the current Matsuida Castle ruins. Tensho 17 year (1589), when [Odawara Battle] was launched by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, Matsuida Castle became the important palce for Maeda Toshiie, Uesugi Kagekatsu, Sanada Masayuki and others.

Daidouji Masashige was imprisoned in the castle for 3 months, and finally he was surrendered and opened the castle. Therefore, Matsuida Castle became abandoned. Nowadays, some soil, moats and stones are left.
