Yamamoto Mountain Castle is a mountain castle located in Nishiatsuji, Takatsuki Town, Nagahama Citry, Shiga Province. Castle built year is unknown. It is said that Yamashita Castle, which forms the foundation of Yamamoto Mountain Castle, existed in the late Heian Era.
When entering Sengoku Era, Kitaomi became a country governed by Mr. Azai family, and [Atsuji Sadayuki] was the owner of Yamamoto Mountain Castle. The conflict between Azai Hisayoshi•Hisamasa and Oda Nobunaga started, Sadayuki participated in the [battle of Anegawa ] leading one thousand soldiers in Genki 1 year (1570).
Nobunaga continued to attack Mr. Azai after this battle, Sadayuki defeated Oda family by using the strategy of [Kinoshita Tokichiro (Hashiba Hideyoshi)], the vassal of Nobunaga. When Mr. Azai was destroyed, he belonged to the subordinate of Hashiba Hideyoshi, who went to North Omi and fought various regions.
When Hideyoshi was forced to face Mouri battle as Chugoku Regional Officer, he was a direct troop of Nobunaga in Kunimoto. Tensho 10 year (1582), when Akechi Mitsuhide surrendered the master’s Nobunaga at [Honnoji Temple], the father and son of Atsuji quickly belonged to Mitsuhide. In the same year, when the “battle of Yamazaki” broke out between Hashiba Hideyoshi and Akechi Mitsuhide, Mitsuhide army lost, all his family was captured and executed.
It is thought that Atsuji family was destroyed and Yamamoto Mountain Castle also became abandoned. Nowadays, castle ruins are the Ninomaru trace, Sannomaru trace and moat, soil base, bending wheel, etc are left.
