Akagi Castle
[Description]
Akagi Castle was a hill castle which was located in Akagi Kiwa-cho Kumano-shi, Mie. It was build around 1589 by Takatora Todo, who was famous for designing castles.
Hideyoshi Toyotomi sent Takatora Todo and Nagatonokami Haneda to Kumano, and had
them build Akagi Castle in order to suppress Kitayama Riot. Since the timber industry was prosperous there, the Toyotomi government saw the land of Kumano valuable.
After Takatora stepped down from his position in 1595 and there is no valid record on who was in charge of the land; however, Mr. Asano at Akagi Castle successfully suppressed the second Kitayama Riot, which happened during siege of Osaka in winter of 1614.
Many believe that Akagi Castle became a deserted castle after peace was achieved in
Kumano. At today’s Akagi castle ruin, stone fences, Masugata-style gates, and bits of
fortress can be found.
This caslte is known as a casle in the sky because its foundation would dissapear in the
cloud when foggy.
