Nagahama Castle
Nagahama castle was the Asai family’s old territory, also known as the castle where Hideyoshi Hashiba became the owner for the first time appointed by Nobunaga.

Nagahama castle was located in Nagahama-shi in Shiga prefecture, and it was built by Hideyoshi Hashiba. It was given to Hideyoshi Hashiba by Nobunaga Oda in 1573 after his achievement at the attack of Nagamasa Asai.
It is said that at that time he changed the name of this area to Nagahama from Imahama. Asai-shi’s Odani castle was demolished, and it Nagahama castle was built using its materials, and the construction finished around 1575-1576.
Stone walls were built along lake Biwa so that boats could directly enter. The town castle was moved from Odani castle as it was. It was the first castle that Hideyoshi had built. and it is also where he learned to govern a town castle.
After the incident of Honnoji, Katsutoyo Shibata, Katsuie Shibata’s nephew, became the owner of Nagahama castle. But shortly after he was attacked and defeated by Hideyoshi. After the battle of Shizugatake, Hideyoshi’s vassal, Kazutoyo Yamauchi became the owner for 6 years.
After the battle of Sekigahara, Nobunari and Nobumasa Naito became the owners but when they were transferred to Hikone castle in 1615, Nagahama castle was demolished and most of the parts were used to build Hikone castle. It is said that Hikone castle’s ceiling Yagura was transferred from Nagahama castle as it was.
